Introduction to Fly Fishing
As expected, is the basic level 1 class focusing on getting you started. At this level, we will help you determine a starting point in terms of what gear is right for you by discussing rod weights and how they relate to species and the differences between reels and lines. We will touch on basic fish behavior, forage and how they relate to the fly angler. The casting instruction will have you work through the basic cast but by the end of the session, you will be able to perform at least two level 2 casts, preparing you for the next stage.

Intermediate Level
We will be focusing on situational casting and presentations to help you better deal with the everyday occurrences on the water as more often than not, we are faced with less than ideal conditions. Instructors will focus more on the individuals' skill level and work closely with each student. We will first analyze your cast, discuss it and then develop personalized exercises to improve on those skills.

This class will also take a closer look at the science of fly fishing to better prepare you for tough situations

Advanced level Casting
We will illustrate that fundamental casting is the foundation for successful fly fishing but in order to be consistently successful, one must learn to deal with all contingencies. This course focuses on advanced casts that will better serve you in tough situations. Tailored for individuals with at least an intermediate skill level (you should be able to perform a single haul and shoot 10 to 15 feet of line) this course will augment your current casting arsenal with a broader array of situational casts and "in air" mends.

Your instructor will illustrate what types of situations and conditions warrant these advanced strategies and show you exercises to better learn the following casts and techniques:
  • Single and double hauling
  • Reach, Tuck, Stack and Curve casts
  • Distance casting
  • Casts that will allow you to deal with heavy wind
  • Proper shooting head techniques
  • Casting sinking tips and indicator rigs
  • Advanced roll casting including singlehanded spey casts
  • Other tricks we've picked up over the years to further your success
Private lessons
Available for anyone wishing a more one on one relationship or for the angler requiring a tune up in preparation for a big trip. No matter the situation; Scagit rigs for the big west coast rivers or the delicate distance required for bone fishing in the tropics, we can get you going in the right direction.

Spey Casting
Spey casting and two handed rods may be the fastest growing trend in fly fishing around the great lakes but despite its' cult like following, it's far from just a fad. Serious steelheaders recognize the long rod advantage on larger systems and have fine tuned spey systems to consistently produce in even the toughest and coldest conditions. Our spey casting lessons focus on these systems and the tactics to make you successful. Fundamental casting will get you so far but the imminent adverse conditions and the specialized lines required to fish through those conditions will challenge even the most accomplished caster. We will get there by showing the "why's" as well as the "how's".

Trout Tactics
An on stream seminar that will introduce you to a more diverse world of trout angling with the focus on adaptation and reacting to change. This clinic begins with a detailed look at hatches and the finesse required to succeed during those magical times when the bugs are cooperating and concludes with the "in your face" approach to hunting trophy trout with large, aggressive streamers during the tough days. In between, we will look in detail at:
  • Water temperature and how it affects insects and other forage
  • Water temperature relating to trout
  • How changing river flows need to be addressed
  • Insects and their behavior relating to fly selection
  • The importance of recognizing rise forms
  • Nymph, emerger and dry fly tactics
  • Advanced casts and terminal set ups
  • The rods and reels required to perform and enhance your overall experience
  • Plus much more
We will also discuss the many "fringe" season opportunities available in southern Ontario as for many, the rods and reels go on rack on the 30th of September. Missing out on these weeks means missing out on some of the best trout fishing of the year and we'll look at rivers and regions that offer these opportunities. This also sets you up for the chance to hook a steelhead as the majority of the rivers that offer extended seasons do so to coincide with the fall run. So if hooking a hot as a hell 8lb rainbow on a six weight puts a little starch in your britches, then you're ready for the class.

Fall Steelhead
Fall Steelhead, for anglers many are enigmatic and out of reach. If standing in 3 degree water, making a few hundred casts and maybe getting a bump on your fly for your efforts is the idea of a good day, than you're ready for the fall steelhead course. The truth is though, steelhead are not difficult to fool and we'll make the puzzle come together, along the way explaining the many why's. This course will highlight:
  • Timing the run and the signs to look for to time the highest percentage fishing within the run
  • Why and when they move and why and where they hold
  • Main stream techniques, advance techniques and the casts used to deal with them
  • The equipment you need and why you need it.
  • We'll discuss why two handed rods have gained popularity so you can decide if one might be in you future
  • How water temperature impacts behavior and how one should react to it
As a prelude to the Fall Steelhead course, consider our Advanced Casting course.

Drift boat lessons
Why would anyone take drift boat lessons? Simple; there is a growing trend in the west, Michigan and on New York's Delaware River where outfitters are offering drift boat rentals, greatly mitigating the cost of a days fishing. For the angler that doesn't necessarily require a guide but desires the benefits of a drift boat, learning how to row one will put you and a friend in the game for under $150.00/day!
